My dogs ear?

My dog keeps scratching his ear and shaking it. Sometimes he'll get scratching at it so much he'll yipe. After he scratches it he bites his foot. It was sort of red at first, but the redness went away. It started on Friday on Sunday I noticed it had red spots, like dried blood, that morning(Sunday) I woke up with his head right by my face(he nestles in my neck at night) and it smelled like Cheeto's it was awful. The smell isn't as bad now, but still ew.

I tried cleaning his ears, nothing came out.

What can I do?
Answers:
Dogs with floppy ears are prone to getting both mites or yeast infections. Both smell like dirty feet in a locker room. Mites need to be killed by using a pyrethrin based medicine, while yeast is a fungus and needs a fungucide. You might try using rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball 3 times a day for a day or two. If it gets better than it is probably yeast.

Mites can be treated at home using a drop or two of a flea topspot product on a Qtip and wiping it deeply in the ear. But you have to be careful not to allow the stuff to get anywhere a dog can lick it. Just buy the cheap OTC stuff for that, don't use the prescription Frontline. It's will work but not as good as the stuff from the vet

Yeast is actually a more serious problem, but easier to treat. He might need some Antibiotics too, if he has scratched his ear up.

This is a reoccurring problem in dogs with floppy ears. Just because it clears up once does not mean it will stay well. You will have to watch him his whole life for ear issues.
Take him to the vet. The red spots / dried blood are probably just from the scratching.

Even though nothing came out when you cleaned them, doesn't mean they're clean. Especially since it smells, it can mean an infection. If your dog has droopy ears it can be a little more prone to infections too, also dogs that go swimming a lot can get infections. Basically the vet will have a look in the ear and see what's bothering him, and if it's infected, give you some antibiotic drops or something. He may also clean try syringing any gunk out too.
Take him to the vet..there could be a foxtail in his ear or mites or an infection or ???

Your dog is trying to tell you something is wrong.
It is more than likely a yeast infection, but have your vet confirm it. We use Malaseb wash dilute 1part to 30parts water. You really need to get it sorted out quickly as to much scratching at the ear can bust blood vessels causing the ear to swell and requiring surgery to repair.
We have an afghan hound whos ears get infected like that. We had to take him to the vet and was givin a wash to squirt in his ears. It is an infection of some sort. And boy, it sure does stink! Be careful if you attempt to clean them again. If it does not go away and gets worse, take him in to the vet.
Sounds like to me your Dog has a parasite on his ear.

You will need to rub burnt motor oil on it. and yes it will be messy, but it will cure it. Trust me,!!%26#92;
Change the oil in your car and trap the oil in a pan. Rub that oil all over his infected ear and any where else that appears infected and it will go away. This is the country Man way of saving money from Veterinarians.
This works on mange too!
Sounds like an ear infection...Go to the vet

My dogs dew claw got ripped out?

I was playing with my American bulldog today and i guess somehow he ended up getting his dew claw ripped out. Its bleeding quite a bit and he was licking it. I called the vet and they said bring him in, but it would be treated as an emergency and it would probably cost a lot. I was wondering if it is something needed to be treated as an emergency or just something to keep an eye on?
Answers:
Yes, it is considered an emergency. He didn't just break his nail, he tore it to the point where he is bleeding. That is extremely painful, it can cause major problems, and will easily become infected. That is why the vet said to bring him in now. I am not one to say rush a dog to the vet for every single little thing, but this is reasonable and requires vet attention. Go ahead, get him to the vet ASAP.
keep a close eye on it, clean it real well. If it gets infected then you definitly need to see a vet for some antibiotics. otherwise, you can treat it like you would a normal cut.
You absolutely have to bring him into the vet. That is EXTREMELY painful to the dog. He'll be miserable. I personally don't have it in me to tell you to wait until tomorrow or anything..just cutting the nail too low is very bad and painful to the dog. I know that infection could start too...
We run an animal shelter and in a pinch we would bandage it up and let it heal. Keep an eye on it for signs of infection.
I can't see it from here... What does it look like? Does it look like the kind of thing that you can clean up and bandage til it is healed up etc? Or does it look like the kind of thing that needs a couple of stitches??
well i would keep an eye on it cuz suposibly it messes the dog up a little (i don't remember exactly how) but if it swells then take it to the vet and don't let it bleed to much because he could bleed to death (there are blood vains in dogs nail)
He may needs stitches, so clean it the best you can and if you have butterfly strips put that on the cut. Then wrap it tightly but not too tight. Put anything you have in the way of antibiotic cream that you might have before you wrap his leg. If you can't stop the bleeding get his to the vet ASAP. Keep a good eye on him as well. The best is to get him to the vet! Good luck;^)
If it is bleeding that bad you better take him to the vet oor he could lose too much blood. That is worse than clipping a nail too close. They can put something on it to stop the bleeding. If you shave and have that stuff that you use to stop bleeding of a cut try putting it on the toe to stop it till you can do something ( septic) I had to think of the stuff. I have the stuff you use for an over clipped nail to stop the bleeding. It is about the same. Put some ice on it and it may slow it down. You are asking on here and meanwhile your dod is bleeding. When it comes to my babies I make a way to pay for the vet. Good luck stopping it though it has to hurt.:o(
I am sure if this happened to you it would be a emergency!!
I am sure it hurts like you know WHAT!!!
Try and put some ice on the area that should help with the bleeding and the swelling!!
Get the poor dog to the Vet!! It might need to be put on antibiotics?? It may even have to have stitches?? Take the poor dog tonight if you just have to wait till tomorrow then you need to take the dog first thing in the morning. Don't make the dog have to wait all day to get treated!!!

Good Luck
P.S. The dog is a lot more important. Put the bill on a credit Card!!
If the bleeding stopped then you can just keep an eye on it. Our greyhound loses her dew claw all the time and it bleeds a bit and she licks it and a painful looking stub is left till the claw grows back we have never taken her to the vet for it.
My dog did this three weeks ago - on a Saturday for Pete's sake! Came in from tearing around in the yard and her paw was covered in blood. I was terrified, she didn't seem to care - wasn't limping or anything. I cleaned it up, put on some Neosporin and some gause, applied a pressure bandage and she seemed fine though I knew I'd be taking her to the vet in the morning. She didn't just pull the nail, you could tell she pulled the digit. I thought.. what would I do if I sprained my thumb... I'd wrap it up and go to the Dr. in the morning.

Just keep it clean and wrapped tightly (like an ace bandage pressure) until you can see your vet tomorrow morning.

May I suggest that if you opt to have the dew claw removed, that you have both removed at the same time (my girl had dews on both front feet). That way you never have to worry about her tearing the other, AND you won't have to put them under general anesthesia twice.

Good luck, he'll be fine. Make sure you ask for pain medication post surgery - my girl did NOT tolerate the after pain very well for the first 3 days. She was shaking a lot and even panting. Ask for the pain meds up front so your little one doesn't suffer.

All the best!

My dogs current condition!?

My dogs canine tooth has gone pinky brown, what is wrong with it? Is it bruised and will it recover?

My Bernese MD is extremely well looked after, but a few weeks ago I noticed that her upper canine is discoloured. It was darker browny purple, but it is getting lighter, and is now more pinky coloured with a hint of brown. Could she have bruised it with a toy, or something, or worse still cracked it somehow? Is it possible to bruise a tooth? I am please to say that it is getting lighter, but will it ever get back to the beautiful ivory colour of a normal canine tooth? Her last trip to the vet was very traumatic, and I think she will have to be put under anesthetic for a check up. Please can someone help me before I go to that length, as I am frightened of anesthetic, and I really love my loyal friend and would hate to lose her.
Answers:
Get her back in. She can die of an abcessed tooth if that gets infected.
When things are looking better leave it alone only when thing get worse then get some pro help
it will recover soon don't worry
I would take her in to the vet again. You can never tell whats exactly wrong because dogs, dont talk. It might be a cavity, but u never know
The only reason a tooth would become brown or pink is due to decay or trauma. Either way it will not get better on it's own and will most likely abscess. Your local vet can remove the tooth which will be better for your dog's health. Make sure you don't forget to brush your dog's teeth regularly
CALL the vet, explain the situation. If they tell you to bring her in you can always swing by first and get some anti-anxiety meds.
Though getting a sedated BMD to move might be a bit of a project...(I'm trying to visualize butt-pressing her into your vehicle - you're getting flattened...)
Could the Dr maybe pop out and take a look at her, in the parking lot?

Sounds like your dog is expressing its anal glands. Usually they express as they defacate.Sometimes when the are impacted or engorged they will express inappropriately. You can take your dog to the vet and they can manually express them.
My Golden dog has the same issue. It's a gland, anal gland(eww.). Nothing abnormal, but you should ask your vet if there is a way to stop the glands from secreting.
same thing happened with my golden!! And with a friend's. The food may be the problem. Some foods tend to result in a fishy smelling gas. However its nothing to be concerned over but if you can't stand the smell you could try switching her food, I recommend Nutro Max, or if you don't mind the smell you can stay with the food she's on!
It sounds like his anal glands are impacted, and they need to be expressed by a vet.
