My pup suffers from travel sickness.?

going on a long trip in the car and going on ferry across the Irish sea for 4 hrs, he is 6 months old. Also need help with travel stress for 18 month old dog who isn't sick but doesn't like the car.

You might want to call your vet. They have things that should calm your dogs and make travel easier.
There's a couple of things you could try. You could get your vet to prescribe tranquilizers, but there's side effects with those. If your dogs aren't really severe, try Bach's Flower Essences, Rescue Remedy. It's what I use for 1 of my greyhounds who's afraid of thunder. Takes about 20 minutes to take affect, and is enough to calm him without leaving him dopey. He gets 4 drops - don't know the size of your dogs, adjust accordingly. Health food stores and holistic vets sell it, as well as some drug stores.
keep taking pit stops.

remeber, dogs are like children- puppies even more so, with one exemption; you cannot say "nearly ythere" or "we'll stop off in a while" and have them understand it. Ifact from an animals point of view you could be travelling forever- regardless of weather the journey is a common one or not, 4 hour is asking a lot of a dog to try to think "its not forever" when they arent really sure if it is.
Talk to your vet. There are several possible solutions and somethings you can do that do not require medication. Vets are a good source of this information.
My pup also suffers from travel sickness. We were told to get her use to travel by taking her on very short trips, then slowly work up to longer ones.

Keep a close eye on your pup. Do not get upset when he gets sick. Keep a towel (it is easy to clean) under him. Have paper towels and water with you to clean up any accidents. Also, do not feed him anything for at least two hours before the ride.

Your vet can help you with some meds. Something for upset tummies, and something to help the older dog relax a bit.

Enjoy your trip.
A little Karo surup will hepl before the trip give about 1/2 teaspoon for stress.Keeps the dog calmer. Also you Vet can precribe meds to keep you dog calm.Somthing to chew on in his crate helps also. Also big raw beef bone will distract him.
I know this may sound like an old wives' tale, but so many people swear that it works...

You need to take the dog for short drives at night when its dark.

I think its to do with the fact that in daylight, they can see all the surroundings and it is the way that your brain interprets them as moving which is what causes travel sickenss. Obviously your dog won't see much in the dark and can get used to travelling.

Also, you can get some sort of tranquelisers from the vet which will help both dogs on the long journey,
