My puppy is eating the cats food and poop. Is it harmful? How can I get him to stop?

We tried spraying him when he goes over to the cat food and litter box but it doesnt stop him. Can he get sick from eating either one?
Answers:
I think someone already pretty much answered this so I'm going to elaborate a little. Cat litter of any kind, but especially clumping, that is not natural will cause an obstruction. An Obstruction in the GI tract, which is the intestines, will kill your dog. Cat poop has lots of fat in it and to dogs that tastes yummy. Cat food also has more fat, in most cases, than dog food. If you are using a non-lowfat brand of cat food, or a crappy brand the dog can get sick. Its ok for cats to eat dog food but not the other way around. Put both the cat food and the box up so he cannot get to it. If this cannot be prevented. Buy a biodegradable litter like yesterdays news, or my favorite swheat scoop, its flushable, clumping and its made of wheat so its safe to eat!! My dog gets into the cat box too and I have nowhere to put it up, so I clean it as much as I can, at least twice a day and I use the swheat scoop and I don't seem to have problems. Oh and the food, you may already be giving your cats a premium food, like Iams, Eukanuba, Science Diet, Royal Canine, ect. but if not try one of these, at least they will be a little better.
You sure it's a dog you have?
I don't think that he can get sick from eating a little cat food, but I'm not sure about that poop. Put the cat's things in a place where the dog can't go or is blocked off. BUt, make sure the cat can get to it.
No not harmful just gross lol. Get a spray bottle with water and spray the dog when you catch it doing it , or get a cat pan with a dome lid, that's what I have. Good Luck

cat food is actually ok for the pup. however, if he is eating out of the cat box, then maybe you should move it as the cat feces can cause all kinds of health problems.
Hello..it's not good for dogs to eat cat food or cat poop, especially if you use clumping cat litter, or the dog can become ill %26 die...so you have to keep the cat stuff seperated from the dog .. remember cats can climb where most dogs cannot, we use a little fence to keep the dogs from the cat stuff..Take Care :)
The reason dogs love cat food and poop is because it's high in fat content; moreso than dogfood so it tastes good to them. The cat food won't be harmful to him but may give him a tummy ache. The cat poop is a different story. Not only can the cat litter cause some serious constipation or make them sick because of some of the ingredients in it, if your cat is an indoor/outdoor cat and isn't wormed on a regular basis, your puppy ends up contracting those intestinal parasites. Heck, even my indoor cat always seems to find a bug to eat and gets roundworm all the time. For that reason, it's important to get your puppy on heartgard.

Anyway, is there a bathtub in the house you don't use? We keep our cat box in the spare bathroom tub and my kitty just hops in there to do her business. Maybe there's another area of the house that your cat has easy access to but your dog doesn't? It's a pain, I know, I have two dogs that do the same thing but it just takes some creativity to get around if you have a stubborn dog.
First thing, make sure you don't have clumpable (scoopable) litter. If you do and the dog eats it, it can kill him - it swells up and blocks their insides. My mom puts the cat food on a counter in teh laundry room - the cats can get up by the dog doesn't. She also put a small opening in the wall to the utility closet and put the litter box in there - cats go in and out freely, but not the dog. If that's not an option check out differently designed cat boxes - some are make to keep dogs out.
Yes, it can hurt him. The cat poop is more unpleasant for you... as long as the cat has no diseases or worms that can transferred to the puppy... who could react badly.

Cat food is very high in protein. As an appetizer it shouldn't hurt your puppy, but it is a bad idea, because it can stress his kidneys. If you puppy has loose stools or diarrhea, that could be from eating the cat stuff...

The best way to keep the dog away is to get a little fence or kiddie gate that the cat can get thru, but stops the dog. But all cat products smell like meat, so they smell great to the dog.

You might go to a training clinic or to the vet for suggestions on training the dog to only eat from his own dish...
Cat poop is irresistible to most dogs, mine included. I tried a covered box (didn't work). I tried putting the box in a cabinet with the door jammed open just large enough for cat to enter but too small for dog's head - that worked, but it was too difficult for me to clean the box.

I had a friend who cut a cat-sized opening in a door of a closet and put the cat box in there, but I couldn't do that in my rental unit, so what I ended up buying a cabinet (actually I think it was intended for a bedside table) with a door on it that was big enough to hold the cat box, and I cut a hole in the door. The cats love it (total privacy) it's easy for me to open and clean, and the dogs can't get at it.

and cat poop and dog food will not harm your dog at all. my cat eats my dog's food all the time rips the bag apart. and is still alive and healthy sometimes barks lol.
Yes, this can be bad for the pup as well as for you. Cats can harbour various parasites and such that can be tramsmitted to other animals through the feces. (worms, the toxoplasmosis parasite - which can be very bad for women who are or may get pregnant to have, etc.). Pet cats, feral cats, mountain lion, bobcats -- shed Toxoplasma “eggs” in their poop. They can shed millions of “eggs” for 7-14 days the first time they get infected with Toxoplasma (and they usually get infected only once in their lives). Try to cover the litter box. Get a water bottle and squirt the pup to make him quit. Hope this helps some. Sadly, you cannot teach the pup to not eat pup so you have to make it inaccessible.
Dogs eat poop because it has protiens and nutrients. He might like the food your cat eats. My dogs eat bunny poop%26food and the vet said it was normal. To get him to stop, I would move the litter box in a place that's hard for him to access, but simple for the cat to access. Do the same with the food since we all know how cats can get higher up than dogs.
Iol Oh yes, the ol' cat brownies. Dogs do love em. It isn't good for the pup to be eating either one. Of course they like the cat food cause it is so smelly and good. The like the stools(poop) to for the same reason. Because of the food the cat eats.

Move the cat box somewhere where the pup can not get at it. Having a covered box doesn't stop them, they stick their heads thru the opening and grab a bite. Can put the food up on top of something. We have a feeding spot for our cat at the end of a kitchen counter. It's a spot that is out of the way and not in a food prep. area. Could be on top of a dresser even.

You will have to move both of them. Puppy won't stay out of them no matter what. Best training is to remove the temptation. Lots a luck.
cat food and dog food are diferent, but as l;ong as he is eating adequete dog food the cat food is no problem to him. maybe try putting it up on a bathroom counter where he cant reach it. as for the cat poop, it wont hurt him, just dont let him lick your face. lol
My dog does the same thing. She's been digging up cat poop and eating for a while now. She's perfectly healthy, but it's a very bad habbit we're trying to break.

Poo has bacteria, lots and lots of it. The cat food is harmless.

But i would try to stop the poop-eating behavior.

Good luck
put the cat food were your dog can't get , or get a spray bootle and when ever your dog eat's or goes outside watch him and go out with him (with the spary bottle in your hand) ad when your daog try's to eat the poop or the food spary him and say "NO!"
I'm not sure about the food but the poop will because when my mom was pregnant for me she couldn't clean the cat poop or else I'll die.
Yes and yes. While the occasional nibble on either...um...end, isn't going to be that big of a deal, you don't want to continue it for long. Cat food is very high in salt, for one thing, and formulated for feline nutrition, not canine. So your dog may be getting too much of one nutrient and not enough of another. Also the calorie ratio is different between cat and dog food. Put the cat food up high where the dog can't reach...the cat will jump up with no problems.

As far as the cat box contents go...it shouldn't be a regular treat for your dog. For one thing, there are bacterial issues, and an even bigger risk is that the dog will ingest the litter which often contains clay which can impact in a dog's intestines. Often times they contain fragrences or chemicals.
The cat food he might get sick from, because it has A LOT more fat and oils than dogs need.

The cat poop he should be fine with. My dog eats cat poop all the time (yuck!) and he has never had a problem with it.
Haha. Welcome to Pet-Parent Hood!
The cat food isn't good for him, but it's not harmful.
The poop isn't harmful either. Just gross.
Try moving the litterbox in the room that the dog doesn't go in much.
Its more gross than harmful. spray bottle is a good idea. Also try filling a soda can with pebbles and sealing the top. When puppy does something that is a "no-no" shake the can. the noise will normally deter them
