My puppy hates her leash. Any suggestions?

She is a 7 week old lab mix. We got her at three weeks because she was orphaned. I've started taking her out to do her business on a leash, but whenever I go to buckle it on to her collar she growls and snaps. Any suggestions?
Answers:
Leave it on.
Let her drag it around for a week or so, she will get used to the feel and it will stop bothering her.

A few times a day, while she's dragging it around, pick it up. Don't do anything else, just hold it a minute and put it down again. She will get the idea slowly and gradually that a leash is a good thing.

If she seems too stressed, start with ribbon. Get 6 feet of cloth ribbon and tie it to the collar, and gradually work up to the leash.

Look into obedience training. She sounds like a character, and you may need help with her. Classes teach you how to train so you don't make her problems worse.
fence in your back yard.
if u dont dominate the dog now she will be your boss
you could get her a harness to try failing thaqt it will have to be a lead and mussle,,,,,,,,,,
You might try giving her a treat after she lets you put it on her. Pet her and say "good girl", just like you would if you were trying to teach her a trick.
no, i just recently got a chocolate labrador retriever she is 6 weeks and doesnt like her leash either
Can you leave a short nylon leash on her all the time? That way she will get used to it, and you will be able to control her are correct her (she should not be allowed to snap or growl at anyone). This is unusual behavior for such a young puppy, and something you should correct firmly and right away.

If she is reluctant to go out of the house with you, try coaxing her at first with treats so she sees the walk as a fun thing.
You have to keep taking her out on the leash. And reward her if you put on her leash and doesn't snap or growl.
Reasons why:
*It might be too tight (It should beable to fit two fingers
*It might be itchy
*Alot of dogs don't like chain collars
*Missis her mom
*Has brain damage cause of not enough "Mommy milk"
*You might be pulling to hard on the leash which causes any of the reasons above

I hope I help!
it is too bad for her. all puppies hate leashes when they first have to wear them. be persistant and she will get used to it.
try a lighter weight leash for a smaller dog so it wont be so annoying and let it loose a little bit so she has room to walk around
another suggestion is to put theleash on her adn let her walk freely around. either in your house or in a fenced yard that way she can get used to it

good luck and DONT GIVE IN all dogs must know how to walk on a leash so keep trying GOOD LUCK and congrats on your new puppy
we raised two litters and we just put the leash on let them run with it on to get use to it; a treat when you put it on and praise praise praise so it becomes a positive thing not negative
by her a colar so she can pop it you know what im saying or just get an other male dog so that can do something with there life.
get her a harness that way you put the leash on in the centre of her back. I am also thinking that whom ever had this dog may have beat her with a leash this happens quite a bit. have patience with her and give her LOL I am sure she will come around in the future.
let her drag the leash around and play with it for a while.
but dont let her tug with you (as in tugowar) or she'll start thinking she can do that when she's older.
just place it on the floor and let her sniff and chew on it for a little while. (she doesnt have many teeth at 7 weeks, so don't be worried :])
then you can clip it on her and let her drag it aroudn while its on her.

unless its a retractable leash, she may be scared because it makes weird noises. liek the spinning sound. idk. my dog was afriad of it, and then jsut stopped noticing it, like her tags and bell on her collar.
As the man said, YOU need to be Pack Leader, and for a dog as large as a lab will become, that's critically important.

Part of your problem is you had to start raising her so young and she's missed out on some of what she should have learned at her mama's paws.

If the leash has never been used to discipline her, she should get over it. You could try putting the leash on the floor next to her and then sitting down to pet her and visit with her and talk to her. If she calms down, you can place the leash across her and just lay it there and visit some more. Finally snap it on and talk to her calmly and gently as you pet her. When she's not fighting it or biting it, praise her.

Don't just put it on to take her out immediately. Give yourself time to ease her into it as I mentioned above. Then finally, stand up and tell her UP and take her outside.

Pups often fight the leash at first, but she seems more distressed by it than most dogs, so I'd gentle her into it. I hope this works for you. If not, there's a training library below that may have some help for you. It's online at the SF SPCA.
Get her a 'walk' toy. Like those knotted rope. Labs love to carry things in their mouths. Make sure this toy is only for walks, and for play when the leash is on her. Give her the toy, then put the leash on if she growls take the toy away, then try again. Give her the toy, and then put the leash on.

We had a lab that acted like this to. And this trick relay helped. She got to the point that she would carry the leash in her mouth and I had to carry her Walk toy.

My puppy has ticks help?

SHE HAD 3 OF THEM AND I TOOK THEM OFF BUT I NEED TO KNOW SHOULD I PUT SOMETHING ON THE SPOTS SHE HAD THEM? SHE IS GOING TO THE VET. ON MAY 15TH SO ILL KNOW MORE BUT TILL THEN I NEED TO KNOW.
Answers:
As long as you got them off the pup will be fine. Ticks are going to be bad this year so I would suggest getting some preventative measures if I were you.
No, not unless it looks like they're getting infected-- if they swell up or get pus around them.
It will probably ich her.
here is a site
http://www.ehow.com/how_2257_remove-tick...
You didn't give her age...
If she's 3 months old, you can start her on flea/tick medicine.
The collars don't really do the job.
The sprays help.
The best is the monthly treatments like Frontline Plus, Advantage, K9 Advantix... but you must read the info on what age the dog must be to use these. You can get these cheapest from a reputable online pet supply house.

Meanwhile... if she's too young to treat monthly then use a spray like Adams after bathing her in a flea/tick shampoo.

You don't really have to treat the spots, but if it makes you feel better, there's no reason not to. You can put a drop of iodine on the spots.

I usually just pull the tick off and kill it.
That's an awful long time to wait for a vet appointment. Call your vet and tell him/her that your dog has ticks. He will prescribe Frontline or Advantix...Frontline Plus for fleas and ticks works best.
Don't do anything to the spots. Just let the vet take care of them; wise choice.
my dog gets ticks we take them off he is fine i will put no medicine he will be fine.
not unless it looks infected (red and puffy) and then just put some antibiotic cream on the areas.
My dog actually had 3 ticks yesterday (on his chin and in his ear, the third one fell off because it was so big so we don't know where). He gets something from the vet which I think is called Frontline. Go to your vet, get it and she will give you instructions on how to put it on your dog. I think you put it on your dog's spine but I am not sure.
If the ticks are so big you can pull them off, they can't carry diseases. Don't worry!
there is nothing you can put on the bite spots, although you can clean the wounds with rubbing alcohol or peroxide along with a+d ointment but none of that can prevent lime.
Call the vet, he should be able to tell you what to do in the meantime until you can get there on May 15th

My puppy has parvo and wont eat. Will he be okay?

my new australian shepherd has had parvo for a few days now and he won't eat. He had fluids and is on medication but im having a hard time getting him up to eating. If you know anything about parvo please answer this.
Answers:
Try different things.. Try getting him to eat some yogurt.. It will help to build the good bacteria in his stomach.. Give him something to work on and then he'll maybe feel a little more like trying to eat other things. Get the yogurt with 2 live bacteria cultures.. If he won't eat it.. Freeze little bits in ice cube trays and get him to lick it.. If you can get his stomach starting to work normally, he'll be more inclined to try to eat other things.
Keep checking with the vet, make sure that he feels things are progressing along well.. And call him immediately if something is getting worse or you feel like there is a problem.. Don't ask here.. It's important that you find out the right answers quickly or you will lose him .. The vet knows, make sure he is kept up to date.
parvo kills quickly, my husband and i bought a shot at a local animal store and administered it ourselves and they(have 2) are fine. YOU HAVE TO ACT QUICKLY! this is a serious sickness in dogs and like i said it kills quickly. get that shot as soon as you can or yes im sorry hun they will die. good luck to you and your pup
The following websites will help you :) Good luck with your puppy.

he needs to eat small meals 4-6 times a day. we always fed yoguart plain or bannana to pups, hamburger/roast with rice, chicken thighs and legs with rice...what ever he will eat or frezer burnt meat in the frezzer. just no pork or ham. they also got carrots cooked up. give him pedalite no flavor to drink instead of water. I hope tht helps. good luck. and hand feed if u must...it can be broken later...
I'm so sorry but parvo is a disease that if a dog gets it theres no getting better...

With this disease pets inevitably die...

Treasure your moments with your dog and even though it may not seem like it now there's a reason for everything and this was something that had to happen...

My mom had a poodle with this disease and she died too...

im so sorry...
Is there any reason he's not at your vets? Parvo should be treated at an animal clinic. He should be on constant IV fluids and getting his medicine intravenously as well.
If he's being treated and not showing signs of improvement, you need to get him back to the vet ASAP!

If the vet has sent the pup home, it means that he should be improving.

Try feeding him something like stage 2 baby food, chicken or turkey to get his appetite going again.
Parvo is NOT an instant death sentence like another person posted. When treated correctly, there is about an 80% chance of survival.

Try to get him to eat whatever he will. Keeping food and especially liquid in him is critical.

Since he's on medication, I assume you took him to the vet already. Did the vet give you the option to leave him at the clinic? A 24 hr emergency clinic would be even better since there's someone there all the time. Best to have the dog on IV's and under vet care in case he worsens in condition there's someone there for immediate medical attention.
my puppy died from parvo.
very quickly, so just be careful,, and i'm sorry, but i think your dog will die.
omg! i cant believe how dumb some people are! those that said "your dog will die" just because theirs did. dont know a thing

i talk to people almost every day about their dog with parvo. we use parvaid to recover them though. and ive only had ONE dog die, and that was because it died the same day the lady called me! all of the others have recovered just fine.

wow. people need to be educated before giving answers that make them look bad

My puppy has parvo and pooped and threw up on my carpet. Please read and any help will be appreciated!?

My puppy was diagnosed with parvo a few days ago. We decided to do an outpatient treatment for her. She is showing signs of getting better (thank you Jesus) and we can focus on recovery a lot easier. She was misdiagnosed for the first 2 days of throwing up and diarrehea. (Vet thought it was from the corn dog she ate the night before). Anyway, since she is still a puppy and hasn't perfected her vomit and bowel control (but then again who can control those urges?) there are spots all over our carpet. The vet said that the virus itself can remain live for anywhere from 3 months to 2 years if left alone. Bleach is the only thing that will kill it. So... what should I use to steam clean my carpets? The vet said it is very very unlikely that she will reinfect herself, but I have friends and family who have dogs and I don't want to be a bad pet owner and not care about spreading germs. We plan to clean it after she is fully recovered, so we don't have to do it twice. Thank you so much!!
Answers:
There are other products which also kill the parvovirus. You'll just have to test to see if they hurt your carpet. One is called "Parvosol." You may be able to get them from vet sites like Doc Fosters. There are other cleaners, "quat" type cleaners that can kill the virus as well. Find a vet industry cleaner. Call around to other vets to see what products they recommend. Cleaners you buy from the store and non-chlorine bleach will do nothing to kill the virus. But because it's carpet, you may not be able to clean it 100% anyway.

Try to keep the puppy in a hard floor area which you can bleach until it gets better.

With your dog in the future, and any visiting dogs, having the full set of puppy parvo vaccines and annual boosters is the best protection.
I would tear the carpets out.. If you have other dogs that come over, or ever want to buy another dog in the future, you want that virus gone.. If your dog has a weak immune system, it is possible for her to get parvo again. I say dump the carpets, and then you can really clean the floor.. Then if it happens in the future, you don't need to worry about bleaching carpets ..
You should use Nature's miracle mixed with non-chlorine bleach.
I'm surprised they are doing outpatient treatment. I must say I have never heard of it. Bringing the dog back while it's still sick will keep reintroducing the virus to the home. It's normal to do inpatient treatment to do IV fluid treatments which would be very difficult to do at home as they are usually dehydrated.

Bleach is what is normally recommended for cleanup. Don;t bother with scrubbing food and water bowls. Throw them away and get new. Also throw away any and all beds and bedding. Parvo can live for a long time especially in feces.
Steam cleaners will not kill the virus. The water does not get hot enough, and bleach will more than likely ruin the carpet.

Even while she is getting treatment, the virus is still detrimental to her. Get her out of the house and in quarantine or remove the carpet.

My puppy has pale skin. Help?

I have a six month old american bulldog, and she has white fur so it's easy to see the skin around her eyes, ears, lips. I noticed that when she is upset her skin will flush, but sometimes it's a real light pale color-like this morning. She eats fine, she drinks her water (we have it out all of the time for her), and she is still really active. Her gums also get pale. I have only heard bad things about pale gums with dogs, but can it be normal too for her skin to fluctuate like that?
PLEASE HELP!
Answers:
Don't you just hate people who are rude and bossy and accuse you of not caring for your dog? I bet they are lonely people who have little or no friends and no pets either.

Anyway, sounds normal to me. My foxhound has pale skin, and polka dots under hid belly hair, which is white. When I first noticed those, I rushed him off to the vets (because I do not care for him) thinking he had cancer. My vet thinks I am retarded and assured me he is ok. I panic too, so brush these idiots off.

You can see my mastiff on mastiffs360.com
yes normal..dont worry
you should take her to the vet
call the vet and then you can find out for sure
She's probably fine but you may take her to the vet to make sure she's not getting anaemic or something as that can be a sign of the pale gums.
She sounds fine to me, but you should just call the vet and ask them yourself. They won't charge you for asking a question. They will also tell you if they think you should bring her over there. Instead of spending money on a check up just to find out everythings fine!

Good luck!
she may have worms because my dog got wormed and PALE SKIN NO MORE
take it to a vet. God be responsible!

My puppy has pain after vaccination.?

My puppy is really sore and whining a bit after her 9 week vaccination. It hurts her to move around and she yelps when we pick her up. She just had her vaccination 2 hours ago.

We called the emergency number, but they said unless she vomits, she should be ok by tomorrow. But she is really hurting. Anyone experience this before?

She moved around a lot while the vet gave her the shot.
Answers:
Most vets have changed to a "all in one vaccine". It has a lot of side effects. I took my dog, he is three, about two months ago. She explained the side effects to me, I was like he has never had any before we will be fine. He was sick. He would not move. He looked disoriented, he limped, he cried. It was awful. It made me cry. I called too, they said and long as he is not swelling in the face or anything like vomiting he was fine. I finally picked up him, put him in his cage with his blanket and let him be. I was up all night watching him. The next morning he was a ok and back to himself.

The new vaccines are so the can quickly identify a reaction, but the it is directly injected in their muscles. It has more affect on them than the old ones do.

Keep an eye on your baby. She is ok. Just watch for facial swelling and extreme sickness. She will be just fine tomorrow.
you can give her a little bit of childrens tylenol
A vaccination is essentially just a small bit of the virus you're protecting her against, so her body can build up an immunity to it. She's probably just a little sick.

The hospitial is right- she'll be alright.
Yes it does happen some times. She will be better by tomorrow. Poor pup.
If she is still very sore tomorrow please call your vet. She will be very sleepy tonight so just let her rest OK

NO, NO, no Tylenol for dogs ever!
I have a chihuahua and i took him to petsmart for his vaccination he screamed for 3 days when we picked him up. Only thing you have to do is leave him in his cage for a few days and see how it works out.
this happens sometimes.follow your vets advice and remain calm.your dog is taking her emotional cues from you. if she hurts when you pick her up.don't pick her up ...let her rest quietly by herself until morning and moniter the situation. DO NOT give her childrens tylenol
Shots can affect dogs just like they can affect humans. Sometimes, certain shots can make the area surrounding the location where the shot was given sore and/or tender. It is best to just let her be. She will get irritated if you try to pick her up or move her a lot.

She should be fine tomorrow. If the area becomes swollen, or she begins to vomit, as your vet said, take her in - she could be having an allergic reaction. If you dont notice nausae or swelling, she should be fine.

Good luck!
Poor baby! Try a heating pad on low. It will relax the muscle that the shot was given in, speed up the flow of blood through the tissues %26 make her more comfortable.

Make sure that she drinks plenty of water too, so that the vaccine moves easier.

If you do decide to give her something for the pain, tylenol or aspirin should be given with a little food to protect the lining of her digestive tract. And make sure that you measure the dosage by her weight.
Ok.. Your dog had its vaccines today. It is normal for the shots to cause a little pain.. It may even cause them to sleep a little more than usual. Don't worry unless you see different signs.. Like I said, it's normal.. I'm a Surgery Tech/Vet Assistant, I've seen it MANY times before..

~Jen
sure she wil lbe fine give an extra love
This isn't all that uncommon for the injection site to become very sore. It will go away in a day or two. Never ever give a dog Tylenol, if you want to give an analgesic baby aspirin (81mg) is the recommended. The recommended dose is 1/2 tablet for each 10 to 20 pounds of dog. Not to exceed 2 tablets.
Have you tried putting a ice pack on the site? This can help if there is any swelling to that area and will help with the pain.
When dogs hurt they become scared and do not want to move the area that hurts.
Try to keep the puppy calm as possible!! Try and keep her up in your lap if that is what she likes. Baby her as much as she will allow. That will comfort her.
I have a puppy she is 14 weeks old. I know about those shots. I am sure it does hurt if she was trying to move while the shot was being given.
She should be alright by tomorrow.
I would though try and put ice on the site. Put some ice in a plastic bag and then wet down a wash cloth then place the clothe over the site then place the ice pack over the cloth.
I would not keep the ice on no more than 5 minutes at a time.
This should help!!
Good Luck
P.S. If she is not better by tomorrow then call your Vet back!!! This is your baby and I know how you are worrying!!
Glad to see that other posters noticed the inaccurate information regarding giving Tylenol. Follow their warning and use the baby aspirin only if the puppy does not sleep quietly.

The only vaccination that is given intra-muscularly is the rabies vaccine--never puppy shots or 4 or 5 way vaccines. These are all given subcutaneously--just below the surface of the skin--and therefore should cause no pain after the initial ouch.

From your description, it does not sound like your puppy is experiencing any reaction that requires immediate attention. You would watch for inability to stand, gazed look--and these reactions typically present themselves within minutes of the shot. These reactions are more often observed with the less expensive vaccines, which seem to be less stable--but are still very rare.

Since your puppy struggled during the shot, she may have even pulled a muscle, which now hurts and is in the area of the shot. But actually, many puppies will act like big babies if they think they can get a little extra attention.

It is best to ignore the behavior and try to distract him or just let him sleep in his bed. She will likely come around when she wakes up.
a small dab of liquid childrens tylenol 30 minutes before time for her shot, then a small dab about an hour afterwards

same thing happened to my toy rat terrier and the vet said to do that before and after every shot

not a lot tho! just a small dab, make sure its childrens!

call your vet and ask about it if you feel iffy and want to make sure
Soreness at the injection site is common. Contact the vet to get a proper aspirin dosage tomorrow if she is still having problems. Also get a proper benadryl dose to be given ~ 1 hour prior to her next vaccines. If she's due to get more than 1 vaccine, check if it's possible to have them split up in order to reduce the possibility of being sore.

*** No tylenol ... they cannot properly break down the acetaminophen ***

My puppy has hookworms and i just found out and the vet is closed . is it correctible?

Answers:
Hookworms are treatable, and the puppy should be fine until the vet opens back up. It is just an intestinal parasite, and is not deadly unless they are left for a long time (they can cause weight loss and anemia).
petsmart carries the remedy for this. just weigh your dog so you can give him the proper dosage.
Common and correctible. Just make an appointment with the vet for next week and have your puppy dewormed.
If you haven't taken the dog to the vet yet, how do you know it has hookworms?

Most worms, like hookworms, are easily treated with medication (like Drontal) from the vet's office.

Take a fecal (poop) sample to the vet along with your dog. The vet can check to make sure that hookworms are the only parasites your dog may dealing with.
Look for a product made by Farnam called triple wormer. Folloe the instructions, it works! Been using it for years! Or try www.farnam.com
