How the heck do you break them of this short of them getting kicked?? He thinks he is doing his job by "rounding" them up but they really don't like it and I am afraid one will hurt him, yelling at him doesn't work and he gets out of the fenced yard.
Anyone have any good ideas?

Well speaking from experience, even if your dog gets kicked, ran over, chased and bit he won't stop chasing them without training and a job from you.. You have to be out there giving your dog jobs on what to do and train him not to chase.. You could start with obedience training and go from there. The thing with using a long line is it might get caught up in the horses feet..1 good thing is that dogs are pretty tough, I've seen them run down by the horses and pop right up for some more...It's not easy but with a lot of work you will get it.. and border collies learn very quickly:> Good Luck
collies are bred to do that..he will be fine
he'll stop the first time he gets kicked in the head.
he is working, he is a hard working dog. Have you tried moving him so he cant see the horses? I think as long as he can see them he is going to want to round them up.
it is in his nature, good luck trying to get him to stop! :)... You could get him some sheep or a few goats, they will herd those by preference if they are available
You can train a Border Collie when to herd and when not to herd, but if he is kept from herding horses or sheep all the time, he will get bored and extremely frustrated!
This will drive him nuts so of course he will escape however he can just so he can herd the horses.
You have to allow him to have an outlet for his extreme herding instinct ability as well as his pent up energy.
Oh, and even if he gets kicked by one or all of the horses, he will still keep working!! Border Collies are famous for working their stock until they are near dead.
Why do you have such as high energy breed if you do not have a need for a working dog? Why not give the dog an appropriate outlet?
Train him. Chasing is not working, it is bad and he will get hurt - don't let that happen. He needs a constructive job like
guard the gate, do this, do that, etc. Instead of the chase you
can tell him lie down, or way back. If he isn't listening you need to keep him on a long leash and jump on it when he starts the chase.
Yelling at him only increases the excitement of the chase.
Its his nature. My border collie mix tries to 'round up' my family. I know you wont want to hear this, but you have to get him away from anything he can herd, unless he is supposed to. You night have to give him away or keep him inside. Sorry! Good luck and hope this helps!
The best way to get a border collie to stop herding the horses is to buy him sheep! Border collies are a breed that must have a job to do or they will drive you crazy! So, you need to find him something else to do so he doesn't think herding horses is his job.
