My labrador shakes his head and paws his ears?

is this an infection? what can i do? is there a remedy? or is he cracking up.
Answers:
He probably has an ear infection, very common in larger dogs. The best way to tell is if the ear has a distinct smell, different than before. You should take him/her to the vet as soon as possible since it is probably not bad now, but can develop into a severe problem later.
He may have ear mites. Take him to the vet.
He's drugged
Sounds like an ear infection. The vet can give you drops or cream.
Sounds like some issue with his ears, I would have the vet check him out.
Could be nothing, could be something. Have the vet check him out.
He could have a sticker in his ear--definitely take him to a vet!
It could be an ear infection, ear mites, or he may have water in his ears. In any case, you should take him to the vet to have his ears checked.
He might have ear mites. If his behavior is that bad, you should probably take him in to get checked out.
When mine does it, its always the beginning of an ear infection. Sounds gross, but smell the inside of his ear and if it smells like dirty feet, than its an ear infection. Get him medicine now, b/c if you wait to long its takes long time to go away.
Have his ears checked by a vet. It may be wax build-up, Mites, an infection or a foxtail in the ear.
Fleas or mites. Also, if he swims it may be water in his ear.
He might have ear mites. It treatable. Look for small (Pin sized) black dots inside his ears. Check out the website below
Probably some ear infection or some mite in the ear bothering him.
I would definitely consult your vet. It could be just a weird habit or it could be some sort of ear problem. It's always better to be safe than sorry. Also, excessive scratching of the ears can lead to an "ear hematoma" where the ears become really swollen, fill up with blood, and then have to be drained. Good luck!
i would take him to the vet, just to be safe. head shaking might mean ear mites, paw shaking have no clue sorry.
Simple take him to the vet...
My boyfriends dog was doing the same thing...for years the vet told them it was an ear infection...finally they tried a new diet..Chyna (the dog) is now a vegistarian and her ears are much much better than they were before. Take your dog to the vet and mention the vegitarian thing see what he says. Good luck, I hope he gets better soon!
Whatever it is it sounds like he is definitely in discomfort. You should take he to the vet pretty soon. I had a cat a long time ago who did that. When I took him to the vet we found out that he had ear mites. The vet gave me some drops to put in his ears and he got better pretty quick.
Ear mites. you can buy drops to put in his ears.
My Lab does that when he has an ear ache. Any breed with flopped over ears are prone to ear aches because there is no air circulation. I clean my Labs eats every other day, it really helps prevent infection. If he gets an infection I have to get antiboitic ear drops from the vet. Try cleaning his ears out, you can buy solutions at petstores and then use a cotton ball to swab the ear with solution
His ears need to be cleaned. Get some ear cleaning solution from a vet's office or pet supply place. You squirt it in there and sort of squoosh the outer part of his ear only the inner part. Use a tissue and your finger to go in there - you'll be amazed at all the stuff that comes out!

If really bad, take him to the vet.
He might have an ear infection or ear mites. You might be able to see the mites if you look. My German Shepherd/lab used to do that whenever he had an excessive amount of wax in her ears OR had an infection. If its just dirty, you'll be able to see the wax. We would dip a Q-tip in water and lightly clean out his ear (we would never go far down though and do it very lightly as to not pop an ear drum). if you don't feel comfortable doing that then take him to the vet, and if that's the case then they can clean it or give you prescription for it. If you do clean it out yourself and he is still doing the head shaking and pawing of the ears the next day, we would take him to the vet to get his prescription - they're just ear drops. That would always fix it up after a few days. Large dogs are prone to these sorts of things, especially dogs that have ears that stand up (all sorts of bacteria can get in) or dogs that hang their head out the car window (again, bacteria and the wind can cause infection). Some dogs are just prone to it, same as some humans are more prone to ear infection/wax build up.

Good luck and I hope he feels better!
It is a sign his ears hurt, get him to the vet, they will if it is an infection, mites or other cause so as to provide the appropriate treatment, to get him feeling better
look in his ears, if he has black gobs or specks of black it is probably mites.until you can get into vet, add 2 to 3 drops warm cooking or baby oil and place cotton ball in ear for 20 minutes 3 x's a day for 3 days. When you remove cotton ball, use clean cloth or cotton balls and wipe ears out good. Even if it is infection and not mites this will not hurt him. But do take him to vet as soon as possible.
Yep, the poor fellow has an ear infection. The pup thinks shaking his head or pawing at his ears is going to make it feel better. Luckily though, this gives us a sign that something is not right. It could possibly be mites, but usually that is more of an itch and therefore he wouldn't be shaking his head, but he would be scratching his ears constantly. The only way to make him feel better is to take him to the vet and get him some antibiotic ear drops or oral antibiotics. When I adopted my dog from the shelter, he had an ear infection that was so severe that it took over 2 weeks of medication and drops to get it cleared up. The longer you wait, the worse the pain and discomfort is going to get. I hope this helps and I hope that you are able to get him to the vet soon.
I got labs too and my female does the same thing first it's her toe nails she is scatching her ear and may have cut it inside smell it if she is infected you will know right a way I put a washing cleaner in her ears to get out any dirt or what ever the I see where she has scratched it open an put neosporen on the cut this will heal her ear up or his you can go to the vet and have the dogs ears check she or he might have ear mite that comes from out side they got drops for that to kill them off and you will have to repete this 3 times a years but whats 5 mins out of life to help your pet but I think it's the toe nails that cut it remember smell his or her ear you'll know right of way if it's infected with out vet office cost the wash and drops are about 15 to 20 dollars
yeah sounds like an ear infection. check the ears, if they are stinky or have a diiferent color its an infection,u should bring to vet. home remedy for washing dog ears in one part vinegar to one part warm water ,pour a little in ear and swoosh around then wipe excess.. im not a professional so u should consult a vet but i do that like once a month to clean and prevent infections on my dog and it works well.
sounds like ear mites!!! go to vet or walmart OR pet store and get some ear mite med I'll bet that will take care of it!!
This may seem weird, but most big dogs - especially dogs that like water are susceptible to yeast infections in their ears. I have English Mastiffs and I have had to treat them for yeast infections in their ears. You could try over-the-counter medications, this was recommended by my vet.
He probably has an ear infection. The best way to tell is if the ear has a distinct smell, it will smell really yucky. You need to take the dog to the vet right away. My dog gets them and they usually give him oral antibiotics as well as drops you put in the ears several times daily. If this is left untreated it can lead to permenent hearing loss and can end up with your dog having a head tilt. (head leaning to one direction)
