My little dog eats her poop and I can't get her to stop.Help!!!?

I have two dogs, a dalmation and a little west highlander terrier but my little dog seems to really enjoy eating her poop instead of eating her food. I never had this problem with my dalmation and I don't know what to do. anybody???help!!

Hi there I am a Veterinarian Technician and hope to help!! A lot of dogs eat their own (or others!!) fecals. It is not uncommon at all. Usually puppies under 1 year and senior dogs will partake in this behavior (but I have heard complaints about all ages!). If your dog is eating her own fecal in your own yard, then I wouldn't worry. Although it is gross and you probably wont want a kiss form her afterwards... I would not be worried. The only side effect she can get from ingesting her own fecal is softer stool (sometimes diahrrea) because it upsets their stomach.

There are two things I recommend you to do: 1) Follow her outside and pick up her fecal directly after she goes; 2) Just let her do it. She won't get worms or anything because it is her own fecal in her own yard (as long as no affect dogs enter your yard).

If your dog is eating other fecals from different dogs then please please bring a baggie with you everywhere and pick them up before she gets a chance. Typically, dog will not eat others, but you never know! It is important to pick it up because you don't know the medical history of the dogs and then can be infected with worms (eh).

PLEASE DO NOT give your dog any pills sold from petstores (there is a reason why vets do not recommend or sell the pills! trust me!!). I also don't recommend any hot sauce or anything comparable... it does more harm than good.

Hope this helps!
put a small amount of meat tenderizer on her food- or get a product called "forbid" to put on her food from your vet.
Add pineapple to the dogs food. This makes the poop unappetizing.
Go with her when she goes outdside and right away pick up the excreement in a plastic bag before she gets the chance to eat it.
Try Deter sold at pet stores or meat tenderizer sprinkled on the food.
Don't panick, a lot of pups do it and will eventually grow out of it.

Crush a bit of pineapple in her food. It makes the poo taste unpalatable for your dog.

Give the other dog pineapple too. Otherwise the little one will just switch to eating the other dog's poo.

Also, picking up dog droppings as soon as possible is good animal husbandery.

Try using "Distaste", it makes their excrement less appealing to them.
#1) Scoop the poop
#2) There are products you can sprinkle on the food that I guess make the poop taste bad (this only works on her own; you may have to sprinkle them on the other dog's as well). Some examples are For-Bid and Dis-Taste, available from drsfostersmith.com:

Also Solid Gold (dog food) alos makes one called S.E.P. - stands for StopEatingPoop! :

There are a few products out there that will help deter your dog from eating its poop. Here are a few...

"SNOOP NO POOP PLUS" Is a tablet form. IT helps alleviate gas, and body odors, and urine odors and it gives their stools an unpleasant taste. Stopping them from consuming the poop.( not proven safe for pregnant dogs)

FORBID..IS a powder you sprinkle on their food. it is tasteless. but gives the dogs poop a bad taste. Stopping them from consuming also. ( do not give to dogs on steroids)

PLEASANT BREATH PLUS... is a tablet form . comparable to Snoop NO Poop Plus.
Ya, my puppy did that for a while but she is now 10 months and has grown out of it. We just had to always tell her no and when she listened we praised her and gave her a treat.
Hope This Helps!
My west highland/cairn terrier used to do that too when she was a puppy but she grew out of it.
