My husband and I are thinking of adopting a Boston Terrier...?

We have a 20 mo. old daughter and a fat cat. Is this a good breed for us? Any other suggestions on breed for a growing family (no large breeds).
Answers:
We just bought a boston terrier nearly 3 months ago. He is now almost 5 months old. We have a 4 yr old son and the puppy is great with him. Although, I do have to say he jumps a little more than we thought he would. My best advice is to either sign up for puppy training or dog obedience classes depending on his age. We started that with our puppy and the jumping problem has already gotten better. He was also very easy to potty train, despite the articles out there that say it is very hard to do so with this breed. They are a loyal and loving breed and are very bright. Good Luck with your decision!
I have a Boston and she is a wonderful family dog. I see no problems. Due note they often have allergy and anal gland issues. She also sustained an eye injury because they have bug eyes. They love to sleep with you and can play for hours. We love our dog.
They arent bad but a better dog would be a border terrier. They are strong healthy smart and small.I have one and shes wonderful. There is 10 people that live here and she doesnt mind.
a chihuahua because they are adorable and protective.it is a good family dog.
I would not suggest that dog. For a baby and a cat, you probably want a nice calm dog that is tainable. With that breed, it is the complete opposite. I would go for a female laboradore retreavier. Another one is the blue healer or australian cattle dog. They are very protective of their family members. They treat you like they would their sheep that they were bred to protect. They wont hurt you , but the will protect.
Bostons are great pets.might I suggest you contact a Boston Terrier Rescue or all breed group that handles Bostons.they will know how the animal will react with not only small children but cats..we have had several in our rescue program and one LOOOOVED to chase our cats... great place to start would be www.petfinder.com

Best of luck!
A mutt is a good choice, rescue a dog that needs some love. go to your local animal shelter please, they need homes and all deserve one.
I think they are cute, but most I have met are extremely active. If that fits your lifestyle, then you will love them. They do tend to have some health problems, so keep that in mind. Any dog with a flattened face generally has breathing issues. And allergies seem to be fairly prevalent in the breed. The Boston might also enjoy torturing your cat. Most of them consider themselves to be as big as rottweilers.

But the people I know that have them, absolutely adore them.

A great breed along the same lines would be a pug. They make great family pets...but have many of the same problems as Boston's. West Highland Terriers are great little family pets as well. And Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are usually incredibly sweet...but they have long fur which can be a burden to care for.

That's what I can come up with off the top of my head.
my aunt has one and my cousin just had a baby and the baby loves that dog

but be warned that they are very hyper

i wish you the best with your new baby and your new dog!!!
Bostons as a breed tend to be headstrong, hyper, and independent; I do not know that they would be all that good with a toddler. They tend to bark at you when they don't get their way, and can be snappy as well.

Westies or Bichons are sturdy and singularly good-natured little beasts. They do both require some maintenence of that white coat.

Australian terriers are happy easygoing energetic little dogs, surprisingly non-yappy for a terrier as well. Think LARGE sturdy good-natured yorkie.

Boston's are GREAT dogs! THey are very smart and friendly. They do have a lot of energy and require a lot of attention but they are very funny, laid back and good natured. It is an excellent choice for a family dog.
Boston Terriers are a very 'high in demand' breed and lovely. If you decide you may not want a Bostie, here are some breeds I would recommend >>
-Chihuahuas
-Yorkshire Terrier or a Silky Terrier
-Pomeranian
-Shih Tzu
-Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Whatever the choice I guarantee you'll end up with a loving dog! :-)
First of all congratulations on the choice of adopting a dog in need. Second I would say that look on line for breed qualities I am not real familiar with Bostons other than that I have friends that have them and they do fine with thier kids and grandkids. I would also ask the shelter or rescue that you are adopting it from and always take your family to meet the dog and tell them that you have a cat and a baby. Some maybe godd with kids and others may not be. Hope this helps and good luck.
Two words for you if you want the best family breed of dog-
GOLDEN RETRIEVER! There are rescues all over the place just for goldens or find a GOOD breeder. They are wonderful!
I have a friend who has a Boston Terrier named Watney. And she is the sweetest dog ever.
My friend just babies her to death, and the owner that brings her spoils her rotten.
Good dog to get.
