My husband and I are taking our 2 beagles on an 8 hour road trip, any helpful suggestions??

Buddy is 1 and Brutus is 9 months
Answers:
test drive them on different speeds and road condition. bring little fans for air circulation.

BREADTHE mint/approved by vet ***dental bones. (prevent bad breadth in the air)

walmart::::: puppy/dog bathing wipes. for accidents/paws/mud etc. just for touch up and if they step in something that shouldn't be tracked in cars.

AVOID any dog parks (people don't care for their dogs and puppies need not the exposure)

GET SHOTS for your dogs. have the vet do the first, you can get the rest and administer them for cheaper and at your convinience (with vet okay)

get a retractable leash, old school leashes get tangled and they are tiresome.

(((((doggie bags for poop))))) or bring lots of spare towels and doggie bags.

go to the vet and get sleeping pills incase they do not like car rides.you can give them a portion of some doggie perscribed pill for bad days (((long hauls))) if they are not used to the car.
Lots of toys, bones %26 blankets. Bring some sedatives if nescerry (if your dogs are hyper). Perhaps bring a kennel for them.
You should just make sure you have enough food and water to satisfy them. Also you need to be sure to make a couple pit stops in between so your dogs can have a little break, as well as yourselves.
Bring along some toys with you, and when you can entertain them so they can enjoy themselves too:)
Have fun!!
no cats
If you like the dogs, i would suggest to bring them back, however, if you do not like them, you could consider leaving them there. I hope this suggestion helps.
I suggest you don't do it. Find someone to watch them in your home. At the age they are at, I am sure they are not used to car trips of that length. If you do decide to take them, good luck cleaning up all the vomit in the car from their carsickness.
Give them one Benadryl each about 45 minutes before you leave and do not feed them eight hours prior to leaving. This will ensure they do not get an upset stomach and calm their nerves. It creates less stress on them. Also if you can kennel them do so. You can give them a chew toy to keep them occupied.
Twice a year we make an 18 hour trip (one way) to see my family and we bring our dog. I just always bring his favorite toys and his blanket and bed from home. That way he has familiar smells in a non-familiar setting. He loves the car, but hates when we stop at rest areas or gas stations...all the cars and trucks freak him out!--so we park where there is less traffic and let him stretch a bit. He doesn't eat much on the road, usually not at all except for a rawhide and water.
....if you don't think they will cope well it might be more humane to get them sleeping drugs, talk to your vet and ask him/her on their opinion..it might also be helpful to have them put in comfortable cages so they don't run around endangering safe driving.
make sure the hav elots of food+water and the windowes are not closed all the way and some sort of bed.
Play with them for a while before you leave, that way they will be tired for a while. Bring plenty of towels and things to clean up messes. Make sure to stop when they start getting anxious, let them have plenty of potty breaks. Don't let them eat and drink the whole way. Only allow them to eat and drink a little at a time. I hold my dogs when we go on trips and they usually will fall asleep or look out the windows for a while. Bring their favorite blankets too. Make it as homey as possible. Good luck and have fun on your trip!!
I have a beagle and he is alright in car drives.
But yu need to bring along treats PLENTY OF THEM.
and yu have to stop now and then so they can have a drink without the car moving
Dogs can easily get car sick.
Both dogs are of age they can handle the ride no problem.

How do they do in car rides? You may want to take them on a few short car rides prior to the long trip so they get used to it, if they aren't already. Also make sure their shots are up-to-date.

I would recommend keeping them both crated during the majority of the trip, it will be easier for you and for them. Put crate bed or a blanket/towel in the crate to make sure it's soft, and also bring a favorite toy so they feel more "at home".

I recommend stopping about every 2-3 hours and giving them a quick walk as well.

They may cry and whine at first, but they will settle down and usually will end up sleeping most of the way.
get booster seats so that they are secure and can still lay, sit, and see out the window if you don't want to spend the money on doggie booster seats then car seat harnesses are considerably cheaper and do basically the same thing: keep the dog in one seat (booster seats are about $100 to $150 each at Petland, or car seat harnesses are $5 to $15 each at Woodman's)...bring treats to give to them whenever they are behaving or just at ten minute increments, also bring toys (chew bones, squeaky toys, tennis balls...make sure toys are different flavored so they don't get bored and you dispense the toys every half hour or so change the toy they have and give them each their own toy)...whenever you stop to go to the bathroom make sure it is safe for them to come out of the car on their leashes and walk them around the parking lot to get some exercise and fresh air-they may also need to potty as well so if you want it might be a good idea to lay a training pad down on the floor of the car so they have a place to go when you can't pull over...a good way to keep them calm is to give them some rescue remedy which is safe for both humans cats and dogs as it is a herbal remedy for stress and anxiety which you can buy at your local health food store or on dr.fosters and smiths website under stress relief for cats-just mix a few drops into their water supply throughout the day.
good luck
You'll get lots of ideas what you should do.. but one thing I find is important bring water from home.. Sometimes when you travel the water in other areas smells different, and dogs aren't so quick to drink it. If it's familiar to them they'll drink willingly and you won't have a problem.. Riding in the car is stressful and they might drink more than normal when you stop. SO you want them to take advantage of that time to drink what they need.. If they don't like the smell or aren't familiar with the smell, they might refuse to drink..

Don't drug them up for the trip.. The drugs are harder on them than riding in the car..
toys
soothin music
talk to them
tell stories
do u have kids? cuz they could keep them buzy
PIT STOPS LOTS!!
FOOD
WATER
fresh air ( like keep the windows[not to high] open or AC)
for the 1 month keep a good eye on the dog.Bring a bowl and food.Toys, blankets and/or pillows.treats.Anything that they will miss or will be homesick.

Have fun!!!
Well an important thing is to get them a harnest. Make sure you bring food and a water bowl but bring water bottles to pour in the bowls if your dogs look thirsty. You could bring blankets too and a crate if the get hyper. I hope this helps you.
Take them on a shorter trial run to see if they get carsick first. if so give them motion sickness meds.
Before the trip and during don't feed them heavy if at all.
Stop frequently to walk %26 water them (carry water, food, dish)
Carry their own bed roll.
This is a great age to start the dogs in enjoying to ride in a car. Some helpful tips:

1. If you have a cage that has a water bowl in they throw some ice cubes in the water, keeping it cool and when the dogs drink the water the ice cubes will melt and when it melts that means more water so u dont have to stop to fill it up again.
2. No Food
3. and when u can stop for a potty break , STOP.
I don't trust my dogs to anyone if I can help it. Just have food and water. And stop at every rest area and let them smell the markings and walk a bit; it's a real treat for them.
