she is three years old and she will not stop barking no matter what I do!! I ignore her, I sternly tell her to stop, I muzzle her rarely (she barks and trys to bite other dogs), I do everything spray water EVERYTHING that training books and other people say to do it does not work. She barks at people all the time just walker bys and she barks nonstop at a dog even when the dog is long gone..she barks all the time when maintenece comes sometimes they can't service us... She is a very nice dog but she hates tall people and has a phobia of any dog larger than her and she is quite small (when she was a puppy she was trampled by a very large dog) What should I do to prevent her from barking?

I would try some extensive socialization. Bring her to a dog obiedence course. Where she will see lots of dogs and hopefully after a while she'll be unphased by the site of a dog. As for people I would take her to busy places for a few minuets at a time and if she is quiet for a sec. reward her. Places you could go where there are people is like Petco. Mabe if she sees enough of them she will be bord of the situation and will pay no attention.
I'm sorry that I would have to say get a new dog. I'm afraid that this one sounds like it's...well...psycho.
Sorry to be the one to break the bad news.
I have a 1 year old dachshund that does the SAME EXACT thing. Let me know if you ever find something that works:) I was just letting you know, you're not alone and dachshunds are huge watch dogs!
have you tried the bark collars or wall hagging things that they have at pet shops..they don't hurt..they either spray a mist that smells bad of they make a high pitched noise that only your dog will hear.
Dang!!! This is exactly why I can't stand small breed dogs!!! Are you sure this isn't just her personality? I've been around 3 dachshunds for about 3 yrs. (my mother-in-laws) 2 out of the 3 of hers are just like that. However I must admit the 3rd one is sweet!
Good luck!
Your dog is behaving as a watchdog should. The excess barking is due to the fact that she has phobia of any dog larger than she is. You should consult a dog behaviourist. He/she can help you with your dog. There is a site called AllExperts. They have an area called Pets and in this area is another area called Dogs. The link is www.allexperts.com. Please go there and from there go to the main menu and then choose Pets and on the Pets page choose Dogs and on the Dogs page click on the word Dogs. Then you will see a list of people (Experts) who can answer many questions about dogs. There are several who can answer questions about training. They can help you. Please give them a try.
Bark collars work. For some dogs, the collars that emit a high pitched squeal when they bark are effective. For real bad cases, you need the kind that shocks the dog when he barks. I've used both kinds, both on doxies.
Its a dachshund thing, mine does it too but not that bad. Try to socialize her more with other dogs and people and reward her when she is good. We tryed a bark elimanator that put a sound out when she would bark but it didnt work she just kept on barking. You could also try to distract her with a favorite toy then reward her when she stops. You could also check out www.hotdogblog.com its ALL about dchshunds.
Your dog acts the way dogs act if they are not socialized with people when they are 2 and 3 months old and they are forming their personality. After 4 months changing their habits and personality are a very slow process and very time consuming.

if you do go with a bark collar get the citronella kind, not the shock collar. I hate to break it to you but dachshunds are barkers. They love it and most would do it all day if they could. And there's not much you can do to eliminate it but there are things you can do to curb it. try a clicker. Click her and treat so she gets used to the clicker. Then when she is quiet click and treat. She won't know what she's getting the click and treat for. Do this for a few weeks then click and treat and say quiet. Only when she is quiet. Eventually she will pick up on this.
ReplyDeleteyou should also find a good obediance class. Find a nice private class for a few weeks. It works wonders.
