My maltese dog just had pups on saturday, one died cause it?

got stuck, rushed to the vet, but the pup died. The other pup
made it but I am very concerened about it. I noticed today
that the pup seems cold and not as active, I put a heating pad
under the blanket and I bottle fed him to make sure he is
getting enough milk, I will be taking him to see the vet
tomorrow, but if anyone can give me some advice, I would
be so greatful. Please

From what I understand, if a pup gets stuck in the birth canal it will die unless the mom gets help. This must be your first time and I am sorry you had to experience this. I think you did great taking care ofthe other pup, allowing the mom to care for it, but also keeping a watchful eye on it yourself. The little bit of warmth and an extra feed was better than leaving it alone, in my opinion. Thank you for the updates.
It sounds like you are a great new mommy, and I'm sorry for the loss of the one pup. It's good that you're taking it to the vet. I would stay up with it all night to make sure it's still breathing ok. Did it get colostrum from it's mother's milk or a colostrum supplement? Ultimately enough colostrum may make the difference between life and death for the puppy, as it is essential to immunity development. Was your maltese tested for colostrum levels? If the puppy nursed, hopefully he got enough from his mother, and hopefully what you're bottle feeding had colostrum supplements in it. I don't know your whole situation so it's hard to say, but I think you're doing the right thing by taking him to the vet first thing. Keep a watchful eye on him!
Hello, why are you feeding him, is not the mom feeding, you shouldn't bottle feed unless mom can't %26 the vet says too..it is a 24 hour a day, every hour or 2 job for weeks once you start %26 if the puppy don't nurse, mama will dry up %26 not produce enough milk ... %26 sorry bout your loss, now you know why many dogs, specially little dogs, should only be bred by experts..this is often what happens..most usually are born by sections %26 have vets on call ..Take Care :)
It might be that the mom isn't making enough milk to feed the puppies or that the puppies are not getting enough to eat because they are the weaker ones of the litter. How many puppies did the mother have, you might need to get some baby bottles so you can continue to feed the puppies. Also think about getting some jars of baby food in 2 weeks or so, check with the vet to see when the puppies can go on solid food like that.
You absolutely HAVE to keep that puppy warm. They cannot hold /generate their own heat for at least 2 weeks. If the puppy gets cold, the puppy is dead.. You have to put the heat source under something but off to the side so that if they get too hot, they have somewhere to move away from the heat. Is the puppy too weak to eat from mom? It's far better if mom feeds the puppy than you. They need that milk that is full of colostrum.. It only is produced for approx 12 hours after the puppies are born. So you cannot goof around.. you have to get them eating. That colostrum rich milk not only builds their immune system but it is sort of like a .. booster, it tells the puppy's system to kick in and what to do and how to do it.. It is absolutely necessary.. Otherwise you have problems.
knowing from experience, the pup could either be a runt, or it is just not fully developed.
Unplug the heating pad immediately ! If the pup had trouble
coming out he could have inner contusion or bruising that you cant see

My mother put a heating pad under a kitten we had with a broken leg btw it breaking and the heat created a blood clot cutting off circulation and very assuredly the cause of the kittys demise. Keep it close to it mother for body temprature heat or hold maybe massaging lightly to improve its circulation! gl with your pup

ADD the above advice sounded good put it on its lowest setting separated from direct heat using a real low setting gl
Make sure he stays warm enough without becoming over heated and dehydrated.Hold him on the breast and make sure he nurses every 3 hours. Is he managing to nurse? If not, you should make sure that he is not sticking his tongue to the roof of his mouth while nursing. You can do that by watching to make sure the tongue is against the bottom jaw while also around the nipple. If it isn't you can open his mouth put a tiny finger in it and put the mother's nipple in his mouth while slipping your finger out. You can also hold him onto the breast so he does not fall off. Doing that every 3 hours for the first week should get you a nice strong puppy. There isn't any milk coming out of his nose is there?

I always use a heating pad and I also pin the heating pad so a puppy cannot crawl into it's cover. I pin the cover closed and keep it on low. Sometimes I will put it under the bedding depending on how low, low is with each individual pad and the room temperature

Oh when bottle feeding Or tube feeding, use esblac or goat's milk. He should not have cow's milk until about 3 weeks.

  1. I have this problem right now with one of my pups! He is a miniature poodle pup. He was sucking a few days ago.. then took into much milk got fluid in his lungs. Vet treated him with antibiotics and now his tongue gets stuck to the roof of his mouth and prevents him from sucking. He is 2 oz at this point. Any suggestions on how to fix this or help him out. He was sucking just fine when born I would not suspect cleft pallet
