My male dog walks to heel fine but as soon as i take his lead off hes off!?

how can i make him come back
Answers:
Don't let him off leash ever!

Sometimes opening the car door works if he gets away and likes car rides.
hold him by ur side with his collar then slowly let go try this several time if he runs off slap him
shout angrily, if it's far away crouch down that usually brings them. or try bribery
Get a 20' training lead. While walking at a heel, loosen up on the lead and let it drag, but hold onto it. If he tries to take off once pressure is loosened, he isn't sound enough to be off lead. With the 20' lead, he has 20' to respond to your recall. if not, guide him back to you and place him at a heel again. Until he comes with the recall, he should not be off lead outside of your property. For his own safety.
try getting one of the extension leads try that for a while and then try him off the lead.
Our dog does exactly the same. He thinks that once his lead is off he can just do as he likes. What I do is call his name and start walking in the opposite direction. I picked up this tip from one of those dog training shows on t.v. It works for me. Good luck.
my dog is the complet oposite he will walk by my side off the lead but on he wants to pull me everywhere when on it
I got my dog to stay by holding out my finger in front of his nose and in my authoritive voice stay stay stay, it took a while to get him to stay keep some treats in your pocket and reward him every now and then or just a pat on the head, you will get there good luck
You need to make a good friends relation with him, that he appreciates you and he realises that you like to be with him, probably he or she feels that it is kind of obligation for you to go out so at the same time he or she feels that is kind of obligation to be with you.

On the other hand take him/her out with more frequency you to go out is not like going to a concert of Guns and Roses but just to go for a walk.
teach him to come first. first just work at it in your house and gradualy build distraction, so that he will come in all circumstances. and DONT hit him, if anything he will be afraid to come cause as far as he knows when he comes to you he will get slapped. leerburg.com has loads of training info.
When you teaching him this.. give slack on the lead. When you feel him taken off , quickly snap back the lead and say no. Each time give him more room, but never let him off the lead until you know he is going to stay with you. When you can drop that lead on the ground and he still with you then you can remove the lead. Each time he stays by your side with the lead being slack give him a treat. Dogs do wonders with treats and lots of praise. Just something for you to try, with out shock collars and yelling.
crouch down open your arms wide and speak nicely raise the pitch of your voice also carry treats i get mine to touch my treat hand that keeps him close good luck!
your dog thinks its a game, if he runs more when you chace after him, stop, turn around n walk away from him... after a few times of this he will realise its not a game and follow you.
He wont like being left behind and will instinctively learn he has to follow or get left behind. ive done this with all my dogs and it works every time
You could try him on a training line for a while, make sure there aren't any other people about or bushes trees etc that the lead could get caught in first.
When he's on this lead he's got freedom but you have control of him as well. Let him run off then call him back to you, when he comes back give him a treat and a good fuss, keep doing this that way he will associate coming back to you as something good. Keep doing this until he is coming back on the first call, when you are confident that he will defiantly come back the first time you call him then practise taking him off the lead in a small, secure area first then progress till you can have him completely off lead anywhere, knowing he'll come back.
Something else you could try when doing this is get him to sit before you let him run off, that way you have control of when he runs away from you and it will make taking his lead off easier to.
Hope this helps and good luck!
Our family own a jack russell cross and he good as cold on the lead unless he sees a cat or another dog thats bigger than him but if you take him off his lead he is off. He looks back once before running for it. He manages to get out of my parents garden all the time so we have to chase him down all the time. There is a training process you can try, you put the dog on a long collar, stand face to face then you start walking backwards calling the dogs name as you go and pulling the lead towards you. Once you stop and the dog is directly in front of you between you legs you can praise him up. Apparently repeating this regular gets your dog used to responding to his name and he also connects it with getting a fuss too or a treat. Its a recall training method i learnt when i took my dog but i didnt keep it up unfortunately.
mines the same he will walk like an angel until i let him off then no amount of calling or treats will bring him back until he wants to it's a dog thing apparently
i think that you should practise playing fetch in the garden or in a small inclosed area because he isnt just learning how to play a game he is also learning to come to you when you call him.

when he has masterd how to play fetch properly try and let him go off for about 7- 10 meters or something and try to call his name, when that is done then you should be ready to go and let him off his lead. dont forget your in comand so if he pushes it when you call his name kinda growl and his when you shout his name.

i hope this will help you and good luck.x
