My female dog?

she is a chihuaua dachsund mix. I found her 3 years ago sick and abandoned. Once I got her condition under control I wanted to spay her---then it came back. Finally I am going to spay her the week after her current cycle finishes. (Dont worry all other pets are fixed and she refuses to leave our home so she can't get prego) Anyway Ive never had to get a female spayed before. I do know to keep her from jumping and also I will have to keep her from biting at the stitches because I KNOW she will undoubtedly.any suggestions as to what else needs to be done? She has an amazing vet and she gets all the love in the world!
Answers:
Your vet should give you post-operation instructions.

My pup was spayed 3 weeks ago and instructions were as follows;
1) Keep her belly dry, no bath for 2 weeks
2) Prevent her from licking, biting her belly. You may need to get an Elizabethan Collar (aka "The Cone") from your vet and have her wear it.
3) No heavy exercise or dog park for 7 - 10 days. This can cause stretching where the cut was made and open it back up.
4) No food until the next day.

My dog slept the rest of the day after her operation. The next morning she was fine. Just take it easy... short leash walks only the first week or so.
She will not feel like doing much for a day or so afterwards anyway.
The vet can (and probably will) give you a thing called an e-collar that fits around the neck and prevents chewing and licking.
You can keep her crated to limit activity. (be sure and give her a chew toy or other favorite to keep her busy)
Don't let her jump; lift her up and down. Attach her leash to your belt if necessary so you know where she is and what she is doing.
The stitches ARE surprisingly sturdy, actually!
Congratulations on making the choice to spay, it will mean a healthier happier life for your little one.
Never say never, the doc will fix her up so she wont wreck the surgical site
you will want to keep her calm and don't let her jump on anything for a couple of days. She will be a little sore and probably wont want to do much for the first couple of days. You are doing her a great thing by getting her fixed! I hope the surgery goes well and the recovery is a breeze for you and her. Just make sure to keep an eye on it so they don't accidentally open or get infected.
Well she will be a bit sleepy when she get home so you may want to keep the rest of the dogs away for a few days. Give her time to recuperate. Remember to ask your vet what signs to look for in case of an emergency. This way you will not panic if you see something strange ok.
She will still jump, And do everything she can but she will not be bothering it for a day...I think.
nothing else needs to be done.. congrats for spaying..also, just out of curiousity how on earth would "know" she is a chihuahua and dachshund mix?? she is most likely a product of two mixed breed parents if you found her
well thats a good thing keeping the dog you really love yourkeep her you know what your doing to love a pet sooo much and to have to make a choose to keep or to give away i'll keep
Just keep her inside as much as possible,(so as she doesn,t get her wound infected ) Keep wound area clean (i used metholated spirits ) and keep her quiet no jumping up on anything. For the first 24hrs she will be so groggy she will sleep most of the day.I have never had a problem with my girls chewing on the stitches(i think it might be the taste of the metho or they know what will happen, more stitches)but like i said just keep her quiet and if possible away from other dogs/cats.Liz
Sounds good- make sure she doesn't eat breakfast before her appointment- if she reacts to the anesthesia, it could be bad.

If you're worried about her fussing at her stitches, talk to the vet- as funny as they look, an E-collar should do the trick.

As for physical activity- she probably won't feel like doing much for a day or 2... I got my girls fixed at about a year, so I'm not sure how a 3-yr-old will react- maybe a little less energetic, but that's a good thing! She shouldn't be jumping, running, no strenuous stuff.

Once she's home after surgery, keep plenty of fluid around. My older dog- when she came home after her spaying, she wasn't interested in ANYTHING for the rest of the day. The next day, she was basically back to her energetic self. My younger dog- she was mosly just sleepy that first day. But like I said, mine were only a year old. Where your dog is older, she may take a little longer to bounce back.

She'll be fine, though. A good vet, and quality home-care will be all she needs.
