My friend stabbed his pitbull in self defense , can he go to prison?

my friend came home to see his pitbull atacking another one of his doggs . he tryed to get the other dogg out of the pits mouth , but it wouldnt budge . the pit would not let go , so he went and grabed a bowl of hot water and poured it on it and still it did not budge . after he did this the pit became angry at him and began to come twards him . my friend grabed a home kitchen nife and started to back away from the doggs . but the pit still came twards him and he ended up stabbing it many times . and the worst part is the pit was still alive but baddly hurt . he then called animal controll and they came promtly . but he is worried they might charge him with animal cruelty . i was digusted by this story , but i know he would never hurt an animal unless he had to .

No I certainly hope no charges could be filed.ANY animal that goes after a person should be put down.WHY/ because animals do not understand degrees of intent therefore they are dangereous to anyone if they show an aggressive behavior, you can not break them from this a sad state of affairs it is but true.also no one can be on gaurd 24 hours a day to see if the behavior will be repeated.Sorry for your bad luck with your dog.
WOW... I would think, that because it was his dog, and it was in self defense, it's likely that they wouldn't charge him.

So tell me... Is it the dog breed itself that's the problem, or did your friend raise this dog to be mean???
no. he cant get in trouble for that.his dog must not have liked him too much to go after him.
Pretty damn cruel. Too bad the pitt was never trained properly. Pitt's have a horrible reputation because of the poor training.

I know you said he'd never hurt a dog, but he did hurt his dogs by not having the necessary knowledge to break up a dog fight. You can't just throw a couple dogs together and hope it works out.

It didn't have to come to this. It's really a shame. Your friend has a lot to learn.
I'm not surprised that the hot water didn't phase it... Pitbulls have a large tolerance for pain, it just pisses them off. They channel pain to anger. Why you should never hit a Pitbull. That's really horrible, but I don't think he can get charged.
I am pretty sure that they wouldn't, but things differ in every state and to begin with I don't know what state you live in and I don't know the regulations in your state, but here where I live, it would be just that, self defense. But when 2 dogs are in a fight you DO NOT EVER want to get in the middle of it. Especially if one of them is a pit, because once they clamp down, that's it, there isn't any getting them to open back up until they decide to open back up. Most of them you can put pressure on their jaws and they will open their mouths, pits won't do that. Next time tell your friend to stay far away from dogs fighting unless he wants to end up in the middle of it.
Idiot friend of yours. Scoulding a dog with hot water expecting it NOT to get angry. Pitbulls along with some other dog breeds will fight to the death if in a dog fight. They will NOT let go unless they want to - so hot waters not a good idea.

Seeing as the dogs a pitbull, why in hell did he put it with another dog so quickly before seeing if the two dogs got along together.

I doubt he would get done for animal cruelty - but he is an idiot!
Yeah, should definitely be self defense, no question.
This is a sad but common story. Your friend may have charges brought against him. The owner of a dog is responsible to keep it under control. And to keep other animals on the property safe. I will be interested to hear what others have to say on this one.
This dog definitely had a few problems and I hate to say it but it shouldn't have been saved and should be put to sleep. I hope it isn't going back there to live. I dont believe he should be charged. He wasn't to know this was going to happen and perhaps the blame should be put on the shelter from where this dog came from?
Why does it smell like BS in here??

Anyway, pit bulls, of any breed, shouldnt be left alone with other dogs. Your friend (if this is even true, which I dont believe it is) is the reason why pit bulls get a bad rap. Chalk another one up for irresponsible owners.

EDITED: Guy? Ummm yeah, ok. And, I might have carried some dog crap in on my shoes but the bs is coming straight from you. Its pretty obvious... Your friend came home to a dog fight... Threw a hot bowl of water on the dog that just happened to be sitting around. the "pit bull" left the dog it was attacking and tried to attack your friend. Where did the hot water come from? Did your buddy take the time to let the faucet run long enough to get hot water? It couldnt have been there before because that would have meant someone else was home and the fight would have already been interuppted in some sort of way. And, nothing, not even hot water would have made a pit bull let go of another dog, especially to go after a person.
Quit lieing about my breed.
He will probably not be charge seeing it was self defense.
But your friend should have never left an untrained dog that he doesn't know well with other pets. And plz.. he knew he hadn't trained this dog so what else can he expect? in a way he should be charge with something! I am disgusted by this story also but hopefully your friend will never get another strong breed of dog to ruin again!
If he genuinly was saving his dog then he should be well in the clear. The owner of the Pitbull may well be charged though, but that's his fault for not training his dog.
It depends completely on how animal control feels about it. If they feel he was unreasonable, they could press charges.however...since he called animal control "immediately" that may be seen as a good faith effort towards helping the dog. Basically, that made it look more like self defense. If he had stabbed the dog anddidn't immediately get it medical help, then he could certainly be charged for animal cruelty several times over
you cant blame it on the dog! yes i think he might be charged with animal crulty
They should put him in jail just for being stupid. If the dogs were socialized/trained, which so many pit bulls ARE NOT, your friend would probably not be in this situation. Your friend is a prime example of why pit bulls, and so many other banned breeds have their bad reputations. Are you sure his story is not a cover-up to some other reason, such as, he was training a "fighting" dog? Sounds a little far-fetched to me.
I really don't think there is any reason for him to be charged with a crime. He did what he had to do to save his other dog. I am very glad he was able to do this. It sounds like a terrifying situation to be in. I am, however more worried about where he got the other dog! Ususally dogs aren't that agressive so early in life. If this was a reputable breeder it could be an accident of nature, but if the breeder was into fighting dogs, all the offspring may be just as dangerous. I sinserely hope none of them went to a home with children.
